Nathan Alston
About

My name is Nathan and I am a photographer based in Chicago.
Originally from the East Coast, I've spent my life telling stories through art. I began as a musician and theatre artist, later became a comic book writer, and eventually found my way to photography and filmmaking. No matter the medium, my work has always been driven by the same question: How can we create something that helps people feel more deeply connected to a story?
Photography invites us to slow down. It asks us to pay attention to the people, places, and moments that often pass unnoticed. Whether I'm documenting a wedding, creating portraits, or developing visual content for a business, my goal is always the same: to create imagery that feels honest, intentional, and lasting.
I believe great visuals begin long before a camera is picked up. Combining a foundation in visual arts with an MBA from the University of Michigan, I approach every project through both a creative and strategic lens. Every photograph and film is designed not only to be beautiful, but to communicate something meaningful about the people, brands, and communities I work with.
My work blends documentary observation with editorial direction. Sometimes the most powerful images happen naturally. Other times, thoughtful composition and creative direction help tell the story in its strongest form. Knowing when to step back and when to guide is at the heart of my approach.
I work with individuals, entrepreneurs, artists, restaurants, and businesses to create photography and video that strengthens their visual identity and helps them connect with the people they want to reach. Whether the project is deeply personal or commercially driven, I believe every image should have purpose.
While I'm based in Chicago, I'm available for projects throughout the Midwest, New York City, and the Washington, DC area.
